Once you have everything prepped and organized, you’re ready to plan your lessons! Keep in mind that these are all options for using interactive math journals (IMJs), but when planning lessons, you want to choose to method of using these based on your students needs. For example, if you know you need to pull a small group, plan to have small group lessons and centers for the rest of the class. If your whole class is struggling with a lesson, plan to do a reteach lesson with the whole class or set up centers so students can get plenty of practice.

centers

IMJs are a great tool for math centers. You can set up different centers based on level or have all students rotate to each center to keep students engaged.

small group/guided math

Teachers often have to pull small groups in math to reteach lessons to students who are missing basic math skills or simply need more time to learn the lesson. IMJ’s are easy for students to bring to your group. Guided math works well with centers that everyone in the class rotates through. Each group stops for a small group lesson at your table and they work on math at their level, whether it is reteach, on level, or above level work.

small group/independent

The IMJ activities that I have created come with lessons marked for small group and independent. Essentially, there are two versions of each activity. One is meant to be completed in small group (or whole group) and designed to help students walk through the lesson. The second version is for students to test out their knowledge independently. The independent version is great for quick formative assessment, exit tickets, or independent seat work.
