John Hattie, author of Visible Learning Plus, identified the major factors and practices that influence student achievement. One of the biggest contributing factors in student achievement is giving students a “voice” in learning. Hattie states that “Visible Learning is when teachers see learning through the eyes of the students and students see themselves as their own teachers.”
One way to create opportunities for students to have a “voice” in their learning is through student data binders.
Each student has their own 1-inch binder where they will keep track of their assessments, goals, and progress. Most of the progress monitoring is based on colored bar graphs so the students can easily read what level they're on and where they need to be.
